About

Poorany William

Poorany William began her initial training in Sri Lanka at the age of four. She went to Madras, India to continue her training under Sri Narasimahari who taught at Kalkshetra and gave her debut in 1980. Following that, she joined the Kala Samarpana Dance Troupe of Madras, India and toured all around India to perform for ten years. Poorany went on to establish her own dance school in India in 1988. She enjoyed working and studying visual arts, and experimenting in costume design. This experience has proved valuable in her ability to further the cause of all genres of dance, from classical to folk.

Poorany arrived in Canada in 1996 and began teaching and preforming at the Centre for Preforming Arts in Toronto. She moved to Manitoba in 1998, and has been on the Faculty, fulfilling several roles from Stage Management to Overall Supervision. She has been responsible for the Adult stream in Dance, mentoring and guiding mature students. Poorany’s passion for dance and music, and her experience in showcasing our performers at Recitals, Aradhanas, Arangetrams, and cameo appearances have made our dancers much sought out around the city, from Folkorama to the Centennial Concert Hall.
